History Background

My name is Craig Beer.  I have a bachelor's degree in history from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio.  I went to a school where James Garfield taught and the history department is in his old house.  I live about 10 miles from where William McKinley was born- Niles, Ohio.

 My aunt used to take me on vacation to Civil War battlefields and to other historic sites all around the eastern United States. That's where my love of history began.  I try to go historical places now when I am on vacation.  Now, I have been to many historical sites in the western United States.  I have even been to London and saw many of the museums in London when I was out there.  I just enjoy getting up early to travel to as many historic sites that i can fit in a day.  That's my ideal vacation.

Washington D.C. travel sites

This is a great little video for sites in Washington D.C.  I love going to Washington D.C.  I try to get a hotel on the outskirts of Washington D.C near a metro station.  You can spend a couple of days seeing all the sites and most of the sites are free. I can spend a day just at the American History Museum and another day at the Air & Space Museum.  Wasshington D.C. is well worth visiting.

Large Mt. Rushmore mouse pad for history buffs

This Mt. Rushmore mouse pad has a nice color portrait of all 4 presidents.

If you are on your computer all day, this is a nice to have for your office or home. It looks like the picture was taken in the brilliant sun.

I've seen that mountain in person and its a magnificent site to see. Each sculpture is 60 ft high and created by the Borglum family. You can walk underneath it and its hard to understand how massive a project it was are until you can see it for yourself.

I love collecting bobbleheads. I have a lot of football players, baseball players and historical figures. This is a high quality polyresin product and a good likeness of Abraham Lincoln. It is not a cheap plastic toy.

I've been to many Lincoln sites in Spingfield, Illinois and in Kentucky. This is a good product to have if you like the sixteenth president,and I have a lot of memorabilia from my travels.

Best destinations for history buffs

I just saw this article on the top 10 destinations for history buffs.  I've did my history road trip to each destination except Montogomery, Alabama.

My favorite travel destinations are probably Boston and Philadelphia.  You can go to each city in the morning and spend your whole day just walking through the city just seeing historical sites all day. Most of the historical sites are located close together also.  I like Gettysburg except its getting a little too commercialized.

Top US Landmarks

I just love travelling the country and I have most of these places in person.  I don't like to relax on vacation.  I just like to see as many museums and historical sites as I can see in a day.  Who knows if you will ever get back there.

Anietam battlefield

I have visited Antietam battlefield.many times.  Gettysburg and Antietam battlefields are the closest battlefields to my Ohio house. Its a lot less commercialized than Gettysburg, so I find its easier to imagine the Civil War battle there with a lot less traffic and tourist buildings.  It was an important battle.  The outcome helped Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

Presidential libraries video

This is an interesting video that goes into the history of presidential libraries.  I've been to many presidential libraries and homes.  They are always fascinating places to visit.  The libraries are always full of information of artifacts from their term in office.  The tours of the presidential homes are a great place to learn a history of the president and his family.  The docents usually give an entertaining  and knowledgeable tour of the significance of each room on that presidential home.

I found this white ceramic U.S. presidents coffee mug with a large handle.

It has nice color portraits of all 44 men to hold the executive office. You can drink your morning coffee in it and take it to the office, or just use it as a keepsake.

Its a great gift for people like me that have been to a lot of presidential homes and libraries. I used to take trips with my family to many hiostorical sites when I was young, and I still try to go back from time to time and visit a lot of the sites now.
